Murang’a county gets Sh1.2b for water projects

Athi Water Service Board has set aside Sh1.2 billion to implement community-based water projects in Murang’a to enable residents access clean water. The board acting executive officer Rose Nyaga said part of the money from Belgium government, will fund Ithanga water project in Gatanga sub-county that will see water production rise from 1, 200 to 5, 000 cubic meters.

Nyaga said the money will also be used to increase volumes of water supplied to Nairobi from Ndakaini dam by constructing underground water channels that feed the dam from Maragua, Gikigie and Irati rivers.

Speaking during a water sector stakeholder’s forum held at Kenol town on Friday, the executive officer said the underground water channels project will be completed in 42 months and will increase volumes of water to Nairobi county which currently have a deficit of 80 million cubic metres. Separately, the Murang’a Assembly is formulating a bill to control water sector and enhance export of the commodity to neighbouring counties.
